The Fellowship of the Ring Plot

Long ago, the dark lord Sauron created the One Ring, to rule all the people of Middle-Earth. But the races of Elves and Men united in a final stance, and managed to defeat Sauron. Isildur, King of Men, took the ring for himself. But the ring betrayed him. Isildur was killed in an ambush by Orcs on his journey home to Gondor, and the ring was lost. As the ages past, the memory of it and its creator faded…

Thousands of years later in The Shire, the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is preparing for his 111th birthday party. His fellow Hobbits like him for his spectacular feasts, but they also envy him for two reasons: his wealth, and his seemingly endless youth. His wealth came from a treasure that he brought home from a mysterious journey, that he went on in his younger years. Only the wizard Gandalf, an old friend of Bilbo who traveled with him, knows that the source of Bilbo’s youth also lies in this journey.

For on this journey, Bilbo found a golden ring. He took it from the abominable creature Gollum. Bilbo managed to escape Gollum by putting on this ring, which has the power to make its wearer invisible.
After years of research, Gandalf has discovered that the magical abilities of this ring are no coincidence. For this is in fact the One Ring, forged long ago by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom. His powers are once again growing, and his shadow is stretching over the lands of Middle-Earth to find his Ring. If he finds it, the world will be lost.

The Ring must leave The Shire, as must Bilbo. But they will not go together, as their bonds have become dangerously strong. It will go to his cousin Frodo, who is like a son to Bilbo. Frodo’s task will be to keep the Ring safe, but Gandalf knows this is not a permanent solution. To destroy Sauron once and for all, the ring will have to be destroyed in the fires where it was forged.

And so, Frodo will ultimately have to undertake an epic quest. Many dangers lie ahead, some known, others more mysterious. The fate of all rests on the small shoulders of a Hobbit, but he will not have to face all his challenges alone…

It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill. But such falls and betrayals, alas, have happened before. — Elrond
